NEC Partners with Anthropic for AI Solutions in Japan

In a significant move within the technology landscape, NEC has forged a strategic partnership with Anthropic to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) solutions tailored for Japanese businesses. This collaboration marks Anthropic’s inaugural global partnership based in Japan, symbolizing a notable development in the realm of AI deployment.

The partnership aims to create specialized tools for industries such as finance, manufacturing, and local government, focusing on secure implementation in environments governed by stringent compliance and operational prerequisites. Furthermore, it will integrate with NEC’s cybersecurity services and expand the internal application of Anthropic’s Claude products.

As part of this collaboration, NEC intends to incorporate Claude into its BluStellar Scenario framework, initially targeting products that enhance data-driven management and transform customer experiences. The initiative also plans to deploy this technology across the NEC Group, providing approximately 30,000 employees access to Claude as they strive to establish one of Japan’s largest AI-dedicated engineering teams.

This partnership underscores the escalating competition among technology firms vying for local alliances, driven by the increasing demand for generative AI systems tailored to regulated sectors. Compared to their counterparts abroad, Japanese companies and government entities have adopted a more cautious approach, often citing security, transparency, labor shortages, and domestic regulatory challenges as hurdles to broader AI integration.

First phase

The initial phase will prioritize merging customer insights with industry-specific expertise to develop tools tailored for frontline operations. As part of this initiative, the partner companies plan to utilize Claude Cowork, Anthropic’s desktop AI tool designed for business users.

Cybersecurity will also be a focal point of this collaboration. NEC is already leveraging Anthropic’s technology within its Security Operations Centre services, aimed at safeguarding customers’ digital infrastructure both domestically and internationally against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

The broader application of this partnership is poised to enhance product development and streamline internal operations. NEC has been employing AI agents in software design and testing as part of its Client Zero programme, which integrates new tools into its own operations prior to offering them to clients.

Internal rollout

As part of this strategic move, NEC plans to broaden the application of Claude Cowork within its internal business processes to enhance efficiency in development. Additionally, it aims to establish an internal Centre of Excellence, with support from Anthropic, to cultivate specialized AI talent.

This internal emphasis is particularly crucial, as many Japanese companies often identify a lack of digital and AI expertise as a significant barrier to effective implementation. By expanding access to thousands of employees, NEC seeks to foster a larger in-house pool of engineers and practitioners capable of tailoring AI solutions to meet specific customer requirements.

This collaboration also positions Anthropic more prominently in the Japanese market through a reputable domestic technology supplier with extensive connections to government and industry. For NEC, this partnership enhances its stature in business transformation initiatives and managed security services.

Executive views

Paul Smith, Chief Commercial Officer of Anthropic, expressed that this agreement is part of a broader, long-term commitment to Japan.

“This long-term collaboration with Anthropic allows NEC to maximize AI’s potential within the Japanese market and further enhance our capabilities in AI and AI agent implementation through large-scale deployments and collaboration,” remarked Toshifumi Yoshizaki. “By integrating the technology and expertise of both companies, we aim to co-create solutions that adhere to the high standards of safety, reliability, and quality expected by businesses and public institutions, playing a pivotal role in supporting our customers’ transformation through AI utilization,” concluded Yoshizaki.
