Exploring Mental Health: ‘Emergence’ by Photographer and Painter

Nature and Art: A Journey of Resilience and Transformation

As the spring season unfolds, nature reminds us of the beauty of resilience. Just like crocuses pushing through the last remnants of winter, we too have the potential to emerge stronger from various challenges in our lives. This theme of renewal is beautifully captured in the upcoming art exhibition “Emergence,” which will be held at 78th Street Studios from April 17 to June 19.

“Emergence” is a collaborative effort between renowned photographer Johnny Joo and painter Tessa LeBaron. Both artists explore personal struggles with mental health and the universal themes of resilience and transformation through their works.

Breaking Through Creative Barriers

The story behind “Emergence” began over a year ago when Joo approached LeBaron for a collaboration. Both artists faced the struggle of balancing their lucrative commercial projects—Joo with wedding photography and LeBaron with pet portraits and murals—with their desire to focus on personal artistic expression.

LeBaron notes, “One of the things we struggle with is not having enough time to create the art we truly want to make. The theme of the show revolves around breaking free from artistic blocks.”

Universal Themes of Struggle and Transformation

While the exhibition delves into artistic challenges, it also tackles broader mental health issues that resonate with many. Joo emphasizes that the experience of feeling trapped is something everyone can relate to. “We all have moments when we feel stuck, deep in a hole without an escape,” he explains.

LeBaron adds that the journey of emerging from such struggles is rarely straightforward. “Transitional phases from places like depression are complex, and profound change requires time,” she affirms. “Nature teaches us about growth, and we too must accept our own rhythms.”

Their works draw parallels between human resilience and the natural cycles of growth and decay—much like flowers that bloom even after a harsh winter.

The Beauty of Nature’s Reclamation

A notable theme in both artists’ works is the concept of nature reclaiming its space. LeBaron explains, “Our art conveys growth and how Mother Earth emerges to take back what is hers.” Joo’s photography captures abandoned places overtaken by nature, while LeBaron’s paintings intertwine human figures with flora and fauna.

Joo challenges viewers to find beauty in decay, illustrating this through his photographs of forgotten homes overtaken by plants. “People often perceive abandoned structures as eyesores, but finding beauty in these places is everything,” he reflects.

New Creative Frontiers

“Emergence” also explores innovative new territory with collaborative pieces and a stop-motion film, marking a new medium for both artists. This film captures Joo exploring stages of depression and internal struggles, serving as a powerful contrast to the rise of artificial intelligence in art.

“We want to show that art doesn’t require a digital wizard; it is about the human process,” LeBaron asserts. By emphasizing handcrafted techniques, the artists demonstrate that true art embodies emotional connection, something that AI lacks.

Facing Fear and Offering Hope

Both artists are open about their challenges, with Joo planning to include work that addresses his struggle with emetophobia, a condition he feels is often overlooked. “The more we talk about these issues, the more we realize we’re all connected in our humanity,” he explains.

Ultimately, “Emergence” aims to foster connection and understanding among viewers grappling with their own life challenges. “If we can offer even a small amount of comfort to someone struggling, that’s a significant goal,” Joo asserts.

Conclusion

The exhibition opens with a reception on April 17 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Suite 215 Gallery inside 78th Street Studios. It will continue to run during Third Fridays events until June 19, with additional programming to be announced.
