AI Tools Saving Irish Business Leaders 5.3 Hours Weekly

In a significant finding, a recent study reveals that a remarkable 89% of Irish SME leaders are leveraging AI tools in their operations, as commissioned by OpenAI.

The research indicates that these AI applications save business leaders an average of 5.3 hours each week. This time is largely redirected to enhancing products and services (37%), strategic planning (30%), and staff management (28%).

Opinium conducted a survey of 200 SME leaders, discovering that almost half (48%) utilize AI tools on a regular basis, while over a third (38%) engage with them daily.

Among the AI tools available, ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, stands out with nearly two-thirds (63%) of respondents using it. Other popular tools include Gemini (38%), Copilot (34%), and Claude (16%).

While SMEs primarily use AI for routine tasks such as emails, administration, and marketing, there’s a growing trend toward utilizing it for more intricate responsibilities like research (28%) and coding (24%).

Advanced applications are also emerging, with around four in ten AI users (43%) focusing on automating processes, and about one in three (29%) employing AI agents.

However, challenges persist for many respondents, including concerns over data privacy and security (32%), a shortage of training and education (31%), and the costs associated with tools and talent (23%). Notably, over a third (37%) of SMEs currently lack a formal AI policy.

Confidence in AI usage remains a barrier, with more than a quarter (27%) of SME leaders expressing uncertainty in their ability to effectively implement these tools. Those who lack confidence are considerably less eager to explore new applications.

On a positive note, nearly two-thirds (63%) of respondents anticipate implementing at least one new AI tool within the next 90 days.

This research coincides with the launch of OpenAI’s inaugural European SME AI Accelerator in Dublin.

Co-sponsored by OpenAI and Booking.com, in collaboration with Retail Excellence Ireland, The Innovation Exchange, and Dogpatch Labs, the Dublin AI Accelerator enables over 120 SMEs to receive hands-on training and guidance from OpenAI Academy experts on enhancing sales and operational management.

Participants will learn to design effective ChatGPT workflows aimed at content generation, customer engagement, and basic automation.

Following the program, SMEs throughout Ireland will have free access to resources, including ‘how to’ guides and explainer videos on the OpenAI Academy website.

Emma Redmond, head of OpenAI Ireland, commented, “There’s a unique opportunity now to bridge the gap between using AI for efficiency and using it for transformation. This effort involves upskilling SMEs with the tools and frameworks necessary to turn everyday usage into tangible results and ultimately revenue.”

Niamh Smyth, Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Artificial Intelligence, and Digital Transformation, echoed this sentiment, stating, “AI can significantly enhance productivity and bolster the competitiveness of Ireland’s SME sector.”
