Over 100 pet rats discovered residing in parked vehicles, according to police.

Last month in Eugene, over 100 pet rats were discovered in two parked cars. On September 23, police and animal welfare officials were called to assist with the towing of a blue Saturn, which was covered by a tarp. Upon its removal, they found numerous rats inside, along with rat feces, chewed-up seats, trash, and minimal food and water.

More rats were discovered in a nearby gold Suburban. The owner claimed to have rescued the rats and attempted to lure them out with yogurt, but they proved difficult to catch. A total of 52 rats were removed and taken to Greenhill Humane Society, where some birthed 18 newborns shortly after arrival.

The cars were towed with the remaining rats inside, and animal welfare will continue to provide sustenance until there is capacity at Greenhill for more. The investigation into potential neglect is ongoing.
