Mila and Mozilla Collaborate on Open-Source AI Tools

In a significant move towards open-source AI development, Mozilla has announced a strategic partnership with the Montréal AI research institute, Mila. This collaboration aims to enhance the accessibility and portability of AI tools, ensuring users maintain control over their data.

The partnership emphasizes the creation of open-source AI solutions, with Mozilla, renowned for its Firefox web browser, investing an initial $1 million CAD into the project. This investment was revealed during a recent announcement, highlighting the shared goal of diminishing reliance on closed AI systems and increasing user agency regarding personal data shared with large language models (LLMs).

“We are working to build a future where AI development is rooted in openness, privacy, and humanity.”

Valérie Pisano, president and CEO of Mila, described this collaboration as a “landmark” initiative, expressing hope for a long-term partnership. She remarked, “We think this is something that could open up a different way of building and thinking about AI.”

The first project they will tackle together focuses on improving memory architecture for AI agents. Currently, many users of LLMs struggle to transition between different providers without losing contextual information. Mila and Mozilla plan to develop an open-source tool that facilitates data portability, allowing users to switch between models seamlessly.

“This is really important for making sure humans have agency and choice,” Pisano emphasized.

Mila intends to leverage its strong research capabilities while Mozilla will contribute its open-source expertise and robust developer community. Mark Surman, president of Mozilla, stated, “We are working to build a future where AI development is rooted in openness, privacy, and humanity.”

The partnership also aims to promote AI sovereignty by exploring a Canadian-made open-source software stack encompassing computing power, models, and data. The Canadian government has identified “AI sovereignty” as a critical element of its innovation strategy, seeking to diminish reliance on U.S. technology, and is investigating a sovereign cloud project.

Mila was founded in 1993 by Turing Award laureate Yoshua Bengio and has since evolved into a collaborative effort among top academic institutions in Québec, including Université de Montréal and McGill University, with over 1,500 affiliated researchers.

Alongside Mila, the Vector Institute in Toronto and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) also receive funding from the federal government under the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy.

Based in San Francisco, Mozilla is committed to developing and distributing free, open-source software, including the Firefox browser and Thunderbird email client, through its non-profit parent, the Mozilla Foundation, and its subsidiary, the Mozilla Corporation.
