Sarasota bid farewell to a cherished pet shop, and the reason is surprising.

The closure of Seascape Aquarium has left a significant impact on the Sarasota community. Longtime customer Joe Martinez expressed his sorrow and frustration in a letter, reflecting on his 40-year relationship with the store and its owner, Rick Marot. Martinez highlighted his personal investment in the aquarium hobby, including building elaborate displays and frequent visits to the store for supplies.

He reminisced about conversations with Marot regarding his adventures collecting fish in the Florida Keys, calling Seascape an institution in Sarasota. The abrupt end, attributed to an acquisition characterized as a “handshake deal,” has provoked outrage, particularly considering the store’s 50 years of dedicated service to the community.

Martinez concludes with a call to honor the legacy of Seascape and its contributions, lamenting that such a beloved establishment deserved a more respectful conclusion.
