New York Suggests Regulations to Tighten Online Sports Betting in Order to Address Addiction — ProPublica

New York gambling regulators have proposed new rules aimed at addressing gambling addiction, reflecting growing concerns about the negative impact of legalized sports betting. Among the proposed measures are guidelines for identifying at-risk bettors, modeled on New Jersey’s regulations, and a prohibition on using artificial intelligence to tailor bonuses for users.

The move comes in light of investigations revealing flaws in existing responsible gaming practices used by companies like DraftKings. Critics argue that these new regulations do not go far enough to tackle the issue, with advocates claiming they merely create an illusion of reform.

New York’s regulations would require sportsbooks to assess users’ financial vulnerability based on certain behaviors, such as increased app usage. Despite these proposals, some industry proponents caution against disrupting established risk assessment systems. As part of the process, there will be a 60-day public comment period before further discussions and potential adoption occur.
