Indiana Football Dominates Rutgers, Prepares for Showdown with Nebraska

Oct. 3, 2026 – No. 7 Indiana football continued its impressive run, walloping Rutgers 47-15, securing its 21st consecutive victory and improving to 5-0 this season.

In their first away game, the Hoosiers amassed an astounding 593 yards of offense. The dynamic backfield duo of junior running back Turbo Richard and redshirt senior Lee Beebe Jr. led the charge, combining for 326 rushing yards. Redshirt senior quarterback Josh Hoover was also a standout, completing 20 of 27 passes for 251 yards and four touchdowns.

Indiana’s rushing attack is currently ranked in the top 10 of the Football Bowl Subdivision, averaging 252.6 yards per game. Richard (587 yards) and Beebe (520 yards) are leading the Big Ten in rushing yards.

Joe Brunner, a redshirt senior offensive lineman, emphasized the team’s running philosophy: “That’s the standard here… We have incredible running backs who run their tails off every week.”

Junior wide receivers Charlie Becker and Nick Marsh contributed significantly with 15 catches for 227 yards and three touchdowns, making Indiana the first Big Ten team since 1995 to have two running backs and two wide receivers each surpass 100 yards in a game.

Head coach Curt Cignetti expressed satisfaction following the road win but acknowledged areas for improvement: “We did a lot of things well. Still some things to clean up.”

The Hoosiers face another undefeated team, Nebraska (5-0), this Saturday at noon at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.

Nebraska: A Formidable Opponent

Under head coach Matt Rhule’s leadership in his fourth season, Nebraska has shown significant progress, with an offensive output of 43.6 points per game, winning by an average of 29.4 points. Rhule, notable for his previous tenure with the NFL’s Carolina Panthers and leading Baylor to a Sugar Bowl appearance, is continuing to elevate the Cornhuskers.

Anthony Colandrea, the senior quarterback, is a dual-threat weapon, with 1,142 passing yards and 13 touchdowns alongside 249 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Cignetti reflected on Colandrea’s style, praising his talent and ability to create plays with his arm and legs.

Adding depth, junior running back Mekhi Nelson and others have provided a balanced offensive attack, while Kwazi Gilmer, the top wide receiver, has recorded 29 receptions for 387 yards and six touchdowns.

Defensively, Nebraska leads the Big Ten in sacks with 16 and has intercepted six passes. Their defensive unit boasts a balanced approach, with multiple players contributing to tackles and sacks.

The last matchup in October 2024 saw Indiana decisively defeat Nebraska 56-7, but as Cignetti observes, “It’s a Big Ten game on the road against an undefeated team… it’s a huge challenge.”
