David Ellison Discusses Future of CBS Sports and NFL Relationship
In a recent press tour, Skydance CEO David Ellison addressed questions surrounding the freshly merged media entity of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. Key topics included the future of CBS News and CNN, strategies to alleviate significant debt from the merger, and how the combined movie studios would function.
One highlight from the tour was a query about the impending future of CBS Sports, specifically regarding the NFL’s potential invocation of a “change-in-control provision” following Skydance’s acquisition of Paramount. This provision allows the NFL a two-year period to renegotiate its deal with CBS.
Ellison remained non-committal on whether the NFL had invoked this clause but expressed confidence in a positive relationship with the league, stating he envisions ongoing business collaboration well into the future. He noted that the NFL was an investor in Skydance and reiterated the strength of their relationship.
RedBird Capital’s Gerry Cardinale had previously indicated that a negotiation with the NFL might be better suited for a future date rather than immediately, hinting at a lack of immediate willingness from other NFL partners to renegotiate before their own contractual opt-outs leading up to the 2029-30 season.
As the media landscape evolves, with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell open to reshaping existing broadcast arrangements, Ellison aims to ensure CBS’s continued involvement in NFL programming in the years to come.
