German Space Commander Warns of Starlink Risks Due to Russian Satellite Operations

The article discusses increased Russian military activity near commercial satellites, particularly those operated by ICEYE and SpaceX’s Starlink. German space commander Major General Michael Traut warned that Russian maneuvers could pose risks to the operational integrity of these systems, potentially affecting their service quality. In May, Russia maneuvered four military satellites near ICEYE’s satellite, displaying tactics that might disrupt satellite operations without direct attacks.

Traut expressed concerns about the growing reliance on commercial satellite networks by Western military forces, prompting questions about their protection. He highlighted the need for monitoring and potential defensive measures, given the rise in Russian interference since the Ukraine invasion. Discussions included the development of German inspector satellites and possible orbital weapons aimed at neutralizing threats without destruction.

The article emphasizes the evolving dynamics of space security and the challenges posed by state-supported activities targeting commercial space assets.
