West Virginia to Apply for U.S. Space Academy, Governor Declares

West Virginia has officially applied to host the United States Space Academy, with plans for a permanent campus by 2027 to educate approximately 300 students initially. The academy will require a minimum of 300 acres and has the potential to expand to accommodate up to 4,000 students. Governor Patrick Morrisey mentioned that grant resource centers at Marshall University and West Virginia University are aiding in the application process. The academy was established earlier this year through an executive order by former President Donald Trump. Morrisey emphasized the competitive nature of the selection but expressed confidence that West Virginia presents a strong case. The application deadline is October 26.
