Marlborough’s Boston Scientific has appointed Joseph Fitzgerald as executive vice president and chief operating officer, effective January 1. Previously the executive vice president and group president of cardiovascular, Fitzgerald will now oversee the company’s global operations and business segments.
As part of the reorganization, Boston Scientific will create three reportable business segments: Interventional Therapies, Rhythm Solutions, and MedSurg. These changes aim to enhance decision-making and investment allocation across the company.
Lance Bates will lead the Interventional Therapies segment, Nick Spadea-Anello will head Rhythm Solutions, and Stephen Morse will oversee both MedSurg and Asia Pacific. All will report to Fitzgerald.
This restructuring reflects the company’s growth and future opportunities. Boston Scientific currently has no COO listed in its leadership roster, a role held in the past by Paul LaViolette and Samuel Leno.
As of early 2026, Boston Scientific is the second-largest manufacturer in Central Massachusetts, employing 2,800 local workers.
