From Service to Triumph: How VetFran Supports Veterans in Business Development

Finding Your Next Mission: Franchising for Veterans

Navigating the transition to civilian life can be challenging for Veterans, especially when seeking new professional opportunities or a renewed sense of purpose. VetFran, a program initiated by the International Franchise Association over 35 years ago, offers valuable support for Veterans and military families interested in exploring franchise ownership.

Supportive Network

With a network of over 500 franchise brands, VetFran provides Veterans access to financial incentives, training, mentorship, and essential business resources. Participating franchise brands typically offer incentives that reduce initial franchise fees, ranging from 10% to 50%, with some even waiving fees entirely, thereby easing the financial burden of starting a franchise.

A Good Match for Veterans

Franchising is particularly suited for Veterans, as they bring skills in leadership, decision-making, and mission-driven work—qualities vital for successful business ownership. Despite comprising only about 7% of the U.S. population, Veterans own over 14% of franchise businesses, contributing positively to their communities by creating jobs and bolstering local economies.

Franchising also offers employment opportunities beyond ownership, as 70% of franchise companies actively recruit Veterans. In fact, 99% of franchise leaders believe that Veterans excel as both corporate employees and franchisees.

Lowering Barriers to Ownership

Starting a business requires significant planning, investment, and commitment. While franchising does not eliminate challenges, it significantly reduces risks by allowing access to an established business model and operational support. In 2024 alone, VetFran incentives facilitated the launch of 877 franchise businesses, saving Veterans over $7.8 million in initial fees.

Comprehensive Support Network

Veterans can benefit from various resources when venturing into franchising. VetFran collaborates with multiple organizations, such as ZeroMils, 51 Vets, MOAA, and The Rosie Network, as well as financial institutions like Navy Federal Credit Union. These partnerships provide access to training, mentorship, and important networking opportunities tailored for Veterans.

Many Veterans also utilize VA education and employment benefits to aid in their entrepreneurial journey. Depending on eligibility, resources like the Post-9/11 GI Bill, Veteran Readiness and Employment, and various entrepreneurship training programs can help support their business endeavors.
