Larger than Manhattan: The World-Dominating Airport Megahub That Shattered Records

Istanbul has long held its place as a major global hub, acting as a key intersection between Europe and Asia. Historically known as Byzantium and later Constantinople, it controlled vital trade routes and served as the endpoint for the legendary Orient Express during the golden age of railways.

In the modern era, the iGA Istanbul Airport has recently established itself as the best-connected airport globally, surpassing London Heathrow. According to John Grant, chief analyst at OAG, this achievement underscores Istanbul’s position as a major aviation center, serving around 350 destinations and continuously expanding.

The airport was designed with growth in mind, boasting a sprawling terminal larger than Manhattan. With over 84 million passengers annually, there’s a goal to eventually accommodate up to 200 million travelers. This rapid rise is bolstered by Turkish Airlines, which commands an 80% market share at the airport and has been recognized for flying to the most countries—130 as of 2026.

As competition intensifies, Istanbul Airport’s strategic geographical location and modern infrastructure have positioned it for further success. The operational flexibility offered by multiple runways allows it to serve travelers with greater efficiency, while unique programs, such as Turkish Airlines’ stopover program, enhance the passenger experience by allowing travelers to explore Istanbul.

Despite ongoing global challenges, experts believe that Istanbul’s prominence in international travel will remain robust in the coming years, with considerations for the rising influence of Chinese airports and changing dynamics in the Middle East.
