From Fear to Friendship: Cheyla’s Legacy Gives Rescued Pets a Second Chance
By John Riddle, Contributing Journalist, Delaware LIVE
Before her name became synonymous with hope, Cheyla was a frightened young dog in desperate need of rescue and care. She was saved from a dogfighting facility in Georgia, where she was found severely injured, ill, and terrified. A veterinary student took on the responsibility of her care, leading to Cheyla’s long recovery journey, which eventually brought her to Delaware.
Cheyla’s Rescue Foundation was established to continue her legacy, focusing on animal care, education, rehabilitation, and helping dogs and cats find loving homes. The foundation emphasizes the importance of educating the public about responsible pet ownership to prevent neglect and cruelty.
The story of Cheyla illustrates the dedication required for animal recovery. The veterinary student initially encountered her after police requested assistance in fostering dogs from a dogfighting ring. At the shelter, Cheyla was found curled up on a concrete bench, frail and unresponsive.
Once examined, Cheyla was discovered to have serious medical issues, including pneumonia and mange. Although treatment helped her regain physical health, emotional recovery required patience. For months, she resisted human contact, even struggling to accept basic care.
A life-changing Thanksgiving visit to Delaware introduced Cheyla to Kayla, the veterinary student’s other dog, who played a crucial role in helping her feel safe. This connection allowed Cheyla to begin accepting food and exploring her surroundings, inching closer to overcoming her fears.
Eventually, Cheyla transformed from a scared dog into a loving companion, although her journey was long and challenging. She passed away in June 2021, but the foundation dedicated to her memory continues to strive for the well-being of rescued animals.
The foundation aims to reduce pet homelessness through spay and neuter programs and facilitates rescues and adoptions while providing medical treatment and rehabilitation. Fundraising efforts help cover essentials like food, shelter, and veterinary services.
For those looking to adopt or foster, Cheyla’s Rescue Foundation encourages thorough introductions in a supervised setting, allowing families to see how potential pets interact with household members. This thoughtful approach helps ensure successful placements.
Financial donations are appreciated, but the foundation also welcomes supplies like blankets, pet food, toys, and leashes to support its operations.
Cheyla’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the change we can create through compassion and commitment. To learn more about Cheyla’s Rescue Foundation and how to help, please visit cheylasrescue.org.
