Voyager Develops Prototype Satellite Dispensers Ready for Flight for Space Force

DENVER – Voyager Technologies has been awarded a $22.4 million Other Transaction Agreement (OTA) by the Department of Defense’s Strategic Capabilities Office (SCO). This initiative aims to develop and prototype next-generation satellite deployment systems, with plans for integration into the U.S. Space Force.

As part of this agreement, Voyager is tasked with delivering flight-ready prototypes of small-satellite dispensers. These systems are designed to facilitate the addition of secondary payloads to launches without interfering with the primary mission. The goal is to optimize available launch capacity and expedite the deployment of new capabilities in orbit.

Satellite dispensers act as the mechanical and electrical interface between secondary spacecraft and launch vehicles. Key design considerations include spacecraft compatibility, safety requirements, as well as shock and vibration factors. Voyager has yet to reveal details regarding the new dispensers’ payload capacities, supported mass ranges, target launch vehicles, or deployment timelines.

The SCO intends to use this OTA to prototype technology with the aim of transitioning it to the Space Force. The plan is to allow additional spacecraft to share launch opportunities, minimizing the impact on primary payloads.

Voyager leverages its experience from its NanoRacks division, which has successfully managed the launch and deployment of numerous CubeSats and small satellites from the International Space Station since 2011. NanoRacks is recognized for developing CubeSat deployment systems that accommodate spacecraft from 1U to 6U in size.

This new program signifies a transition from the existing small-spacecraft deployment techniques to advanced dispenser systems tailored for national security space missions and launch vehicles. Further specifications about the dispenser’s design, capacity, and qualification processes have not yet been disclosed.
