New Exhibition Honors Tucson’s Culinary Heritage | Highlights

New Art Exhibit Celebrates Tucson’s Food Culture

A new art exhibit, “Gastronomy Tucson: Documenting Our Food Culture,” is set to open on September 30 at the Ventana Gallery in Oro Valley. The exhibition will run until the end of January and aims to highlight Tucson’s unique culinary scene and its connection to the Sonoran Desert.

Organized by Art State Arizona and Roche Tissue Diagnostics, the exhibit showcases artwork across various mediums, focusing on themes of sustainability, renewal, and adaptation in local agriculture. Darlene Kryza, responsible for communications and community engagement at Roche Tissue Diagnostics, emphasized the importance of protecting food traditions as Tucson holds the title of UNESCO’s first City of Gastronomy in the U.S.

“This art is indicative of the people, ingredients, and food systems that define Tucson’s food identity,” said Jonathan Frahm, Art State Arizona’s creative programs manager. The exhibit will feature around 75 pieces by 25 artists, including sculptures, paintings, ceramics, and mixed media.

A community photo board will also be part of the exhibit, showcasing images from local organizations that contribute to Tucson’s food culture, including Tucson CSA. Co-director Daniela Diamente noted that the farm has played a role in the community’s gastronomy for over 23 years.

Frahm highlighted the significance of documenting Tucson’s food culture, offering a glimpse into what makes the region unique for future generations.

The opening reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. on September 30, with live music, complimentary appetizers, and beverages. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP.
