57 New Species Found in Deep-Sea Canyon off the Coast of Argentina

The recent expedition in the Mar del Plata Submarine Canyon off Argentina’s coast has unveiled 57 new marine species, including “Loki the Sea Cucumber” (genus Peniagone), named for its unique appendages. This deep-sea exploration, focused on the biodiversity of the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence, revealed creatures residing in depths exceeding 11,000 feet.

Key Discoveries:

  • New Species:
    • 20 copepods: small, ubiquitous crustaceans.
    • 22 echinoderms, including multiple new sea cucumber species.
    • 14 cnidarians: such as vibrant octocorals and sea pens.
    • One scaphopod mollusc.
  • New Genera: Five entirely new scientific genera encompassing corals, cucumbers, and crustaceans.

The collaborative research effort, led by experts from Latin America and Europe, highlights the importance of international cooperation in understanding marine biodiversity. Michelle Taylor, Head of Science for Ocean Census, emphasized the significance of this rapid discovery process in shedding light on the largely unexplored deep-sea ecosystems. More insights are expected as the team continues to analyze the collected samples.
