Will Washington’s ‘Millionaire Tax’ Cause People to Leave? Business Owners and Legislators Have Differing Views – KIRO 7 News Seattle

The debate over Washington state’s new millionaires tax is heating up as voters prepare to make a decision in next month’s election. Advocates argue that the tax is essential for funding public services like education and tax credits for families and businesses. In contrast, detractors claim it could lead to an exodus of entrepreneurs and high-income earners from the state.

Leslie Goeres, a spa owner in Renton, has already decided to expand her business to Nashville, citing lower operational costs as a significant factor. Similarly, real estate agent Nelya Calev is witnessing high-income clients considering leaving due to the tax, evidenced by a surge in high-priced home listings.

Supporters, including State Senator Manka Dhingra, maintain that the tax won’t significantly harm job creation or lead to mass departures, emphasizing that most states have some form of tax on high earners. Dhingra also argues that Washington’s tax structure currently places an undue burden on low-income residents and that the tax will help create a more balanced fiscal environment.

As the election approaches, voters will decide whether to keep or repeal the tax, with the implications of their choice carrying significant weight for the state’s economic future.
