Here are some reviews of The Weather Report:

Letterboxd shares:

“Where has obscure Polish cinema been my entire life?”

“A flotilla of boats drifts among elderly figures, with the separation between sky and land blurred. We see scared individuals huddled together in an unmarked crate atop a truck. A weary bride collapses into a river. Bodies concealed in hay, illuminated by the glow of a bonfire, scrutinized by the authority’s torchlight.”

“In The Weather Report, a series of poignant images and events waltz gracefully between the visceral and chaotic, the terrestrial and otherworldly. Its spirit, vibrant with love but devoid of sentimentality, features an anarchist essence reminiscent of films like Daisies. This narrative neither succumbs to blind optimism nor is overwhelmed by cynicism.”

“The trauma of war, experienced during a formative age, has left scars so profound that even the sight of caskets, coupled with the ominous prospect of impending conflict, serves as a trigger for an immersive journey into the surreal.”

“This community of individuals, despite sharing a home, are essentially strangers from disparate backgrounds, united only by the commonality of aging and a shared struggle to comprehend the notion of living freely.”

“Their journey parallels the literal treks through fields, forests, and mountains that their generation undertook to flee tyrants during wartime.”

“The collective spirit that compels them to band together is a lifelong survival instinct, prompting them to act as one, as they rush toward a steep riverbank to rescue one of their own — not from drowning, but from a desire to experience a fleeting moment of choice.”

“As such, the group itself becomes the protagonist, devoid of distinct individual traits; what’s essential is that all are part of this shared journey and, consequently, sustain similar pains.”

“I deeply appreciate 20th-century Polish cinema.”

My thoughts:

This film is a poignant mix of humor and melancholy. Although it may sound cliché, it serves as a powerful metaphor for life. Setting aside political or historical contexts, it resonates with the universal struggle against mortality that we all face. ⭐⭐.

Director: Antoni Krauze.

Writers: Antoni Krauze (screenplay), Marek Nowakowski (story).

Plot Summary (Spoilers Ahead!):

The residents of a nursing home witness a truckload of coffins arriving on a frigid winter night. This leads them to suspect they are destined for execution to ease their burden on the world.

In a bid for liberation, the elderly concoct a plan. They embark on a mass escape, envisioning freedom filled with vodka, revelry, and carefree moments.

This freedom is short-lived, however, as authorities ineptly track them down. Ultimately, their joyful escape mirrors the fleeting nature of life itself.

As a young student in Vienna, Etelka Freund (1879-1977) had the privilege of performing regularly for Brahms. This was during the years 1894-1895. It is said that he was highly pleased with her performances:

“During her year in Vienna, she visited Brahms every Wednesday at lunchtime. Once a guest inquired whether Freund played, to which Brahms replied ‘to the enjoyment of everyone!’ Her insightful interpretations of Brahms were shaped by her musicality and the composer’s guidance. Brahms even insisted that the exclusive Gesellschaft für Musikfreunde elect her as a regular member, making her their youngest member while still a student.”
