The Review is profiling all City Council candidates in Lake Oswego, West Linn, and Wilsonville ahead of the November election.
Jennie Hill is a familiar face in Wilsonville. She has organized local events such as the Villebois Turkey Trot 5K and the Fourth of July neighborhood parade, and she was nominated for the Rotary Club of Wilsonville First Citizen award this year. Hill is now running for one of the two open seats on the Wilsonville City Council.
“I started to pay attention to what was going on at City Hall and became confused by the decisions being made or not made, so I decided to get involved,” she shared. After applying to join the Development Review Board and the Planning Commission, she felt the process inconsistent and began considering a run for City Council.
Hill runs on a platform centered around business development, fiscal responsibility, and public engagement. Having moved to Wilsonville in 2007, she recalls the community as a “dream neighborhood.” However, recent developments have slowed, and Hill believes there’s a need for greater business activity and clearer community vision.
She emphasized the importance of community passion and the shared interests of Wilsonville residents, stating, “We have so many community members that care deeply about our city and our quality of life and our future.”
Growing up in nearby Newberg, Hill didn’t envision a political career until she established a business in Wilsonville. She identified a “clear vision for our community” as crucial for overcoming challenges like traffic and Town Center issues.
As a leader, Hill aims to promote small business growth and foster a sense of community identity. “I describe myself as someone who leads from a sense of identity, not image,” she explained, emphasizing the importance of effective communication in leadership.
