Google’s Project Suncatcher AI data center experiment has successfully been deployed into space via a SpaceX rocket.

Google is making strides toward establishing data centers in space with the launch of an experimental satellite called Project Suncatcher, which took place on October 1. This satellite carries Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), designed for AI tasks, and will assess their performance in space, especially under the rigors of launch and cosmic conditions.

The TPUs have already been tested on Earth, demonstrating resilience against solar radiation and cosmic rays. Additionally, this project will explore a new cooling system to manage heat in the vacuum of space.

This initiative aligns with efforts from other tech firms like OpenAI and xAI to address the challenges of terrestrial data centers, whose scalability and political acceptance are dwindling. However, experts caution about the engineering and cost challenges involved, as well as the potential for increased light pollution affecting astronomical observations. Google plans further experiments with additional satellites in 2027 to enhance communication between these proposed orbital data centers.
