Banner Supply Celebrates 100 Years of Service
YOUNGSTOWN — Banner Supply Company marked its 100th anniversary on September 25 with a public celebration that drew many regular customers and former employees. The family-owned business specializes in building materials, roofing supplies, and construction products, crediting its success to a dedicated workforce, many of whom are family.
During the event, owner Richard Edward Abel emphasized the importance of customer satisfaction, saying, “Everything we do, every decision we make, is to satisfy the wants and needs of our customers.”
A Century of Challenges and Triumphs
Reflecting on the company’s history, William Abel noted the strong familial ties among employees: “Our success is largely due to our employees who are related to us.” The company has faced significant challenges, including the Great Depression and the closing of local steel mills, but has always managed to adapt.
Richard John Abel, William’s grandson, highlighted current industry challenges, such as rising diesel fuel costs, stating, “You couldn’t imagine how expensive it is to operate under six to seven dollars a gallon of diesel.” He attributes the company’s longevity to its familial culture and commitment to the community.
Employees and Customers: A Family Affair
Generational loyalty is evident at Banner Supply, with employees like Ron Chiarello, who worked there for 40 years, expressing appreciation for the family’s fair treatment. Chiarello said, “They make you feel like family.”
Customers echo this sentiment. Regular buyer Brad Johnson praised the company’s exceptional service, noting that the staff is always available, even on weekends: “You can call these guys anytime.”
His father, Andy Johnson, added that he felt valued as a customer: “They treat you like family; you feel like you’re a person here.”
