An area lawmaker has initiated a discussion in the state House Insurance Committee focused on potential legislation aimed at reducing auto insurance costs for residents of Michigan.

Key Points:

  • Lawmaker Involved: Republican State Representative Mike Harris from Waterford is leading the initiative.
  • Legislative Focus: The discussion revolves around expanding personal injury protection (PIP) coverage options available to drivers.

Harris expressed that Michigan’s car insurance rates are excessively high, stating, “It’s unacceptable that Michiganders are paying some of the highest rates in the country.” He emphasized the need for legislation that increases consumer choice in auto insurance. According to Harris, individuals with substantial health insurance shouldn’t have to pay for a comprehensive PIP plan.

Proposed House Bills:

  • House Bills 4886-88: These proposed bills aim to broaden the selection of PIP coverage options drivers can choose from, allowing for customized insurance plans based on individual circumstances.
  • Currently, lower PIP options are accessible to individuals on Medicare, and the new proposal seeks to extend similar options to all drivers in Michigan.

Harris stated the goal is to ensure that drivers have affordable insurance that doesn’t compromise their financial stability. He concluded, “We want people to have car insurance so they’re taken care of in case of an accident – but that insurance can’t come at the cost of financial instability.”

The proposed plan will remain under review by the Insurance Committee for further discussion.
