Educational leaders and local employers in Columbus County are collaborating to better prepare students for in-demand careers. Over 140 attendees, including educators and representatives from 65 businesses, participated in a Fall Business & Industry Advisory Council meeting at Southeastern Community College on September 24. This partnership aims to align educational programs with current workforce needs.
Employers highlighted a common gap in essential workplace skills such as reliable attendance, communication, and problem-solving, in addition to technical abilities. To address this, high school and community college programs are integrating hands-on simulations, mock interviews, and collaborative projects into their curricula.
Local business owners believe that this dialogue is crucial for ensuring that students acquire relevant skills that meet industry expectations. Clarice Faison, owner of Precious Minds Learn N Play Academy, emphasized the importance of influencing the training of future employees, calling it a significant benefit for both businesses and the community.
The advisory council will reconvene for its next meeting on February 25, 2027.
