The Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana is set to make history by launching a prediction market app through a partnership with Kalshi. This initiative marks the tribe as the first to enter the burgeoning sector of prediction markets, allowing users to bet on various real-world events like weather forecasts, political outcomes, and entertainment awards.
The new app, named SaltTrade Derivatives, echoes the tribe’s legacy as salt traders. It enables users to buy and sell contracts based on event outcomes. Tribe chairman Marshall Pierite noted that the idea originated from discussions among tribal leaders concerned about the competitive implications of prediction markets for traditional gambling.
Pierite views prediction markets as a formidable force in the gambling landscape but is not aiming to challenge existing frameworks. Instead, he believes in collaboration, leveraging the tribe’s past experiences in financial literacy and small-dollar lending to navigate and adapt to the emerging landscape.
The partnership with Kalshi was initiated about six to seven months ago, with Kalshi CEO Tarek Mansour emphasizing the potential for synergy between regulated national markets and tribal entrepreneurship. Kalshi will supply the app’s infrastructure and odds, while the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe will handle marketing.
The SaltTrade Derivatives app is anticipated to launch within 90 days, with users across all states except Louisiana permitted to place bets. The tribe opted not to offer the service within Louisiana to mitigate potential regulatory issues.
Despite the controversy surrounding prediction markets—including concerns about regulatory challenges, insider trading, and gambling addiction—Pierite remains resolute about the venture’s vision. He aims to set a precedent for other federally recognized tribes, believing that innovation often requires boldness to foster change across industries.
