Sherman ISD Launches New Cosmetology Program
Sherman, Texas – As the demand for cosmetology services continues to rise, Sherman Independent School District (ISD) has unveiled a state-of-the-art salon for aspiring barbers, stylists, and nail technicians. This fully functional, industry-standard facility allows Sherman High School cosmetology students to gain hands-on experience in hair, skin, and nail treatments, paving the way for them to graduate as licensed cosmetologists.
Instructor Christy Jeffcoat emphasized the versatility of a cosmetology license, stating, “They can do nails, they can do feet, they can do hair, they can do facials—everything.” The program spans what was once a storage room, now transformed into a practical learning space equipped with styling chairs, professional hair dryers, and sinks.
Current student Kayla Weber, a junior, shared her passion: “I decided to join this class because I like to do nails, and I do my own.” With 12 students enrolled and ten double-sided stations available, the program is designed to accommodate even more learners in the future.
Jeffcoat highlighted the enduring nature of the industry: “Cosmetology has been around since the days end, and it’s never going to go away, ever.” She noted that people will always seek hair and grooming services, regardless of external circumstances.
Highlights of the program include 1,000 hours of hands-on training followed by written and practical exams. Students who successfully complete the program are equipped to enter the professional world or start their own businesses—all without the financial burden of private college tuition, which can reach $15,000 elsewhere.
The curriculum emphasizes not just artistry but essential skills in science, math, and communication. Instructor Devin Tomlinson described the program’s comprehensive approach, asserting that “cosmetology isn’t just about beauty, but brains too.” He pointed out that practical knowledge like angles and formulas is crucial in the craft.
From color theory to client relationships, Sherman ISD’s cosmetology program is preparing students to be exceptional professionals in a dynamic industry.
