Georgetown Reveals Redesigned Blue Hole Park Plans

Georgetown’s Blue Hole Park Update

Georgetown officials presented the latest design for Blue Hole Park during a meeting on September 22, moving into the 30% design phase. The estimated construction cost is approximately $7 million, focusing on flood resilience, natural preservation, and enhancing the visitor experience.

Key Design Updates

  1. North Riverbank Enhancements

    • Terraced retaining walls to improve flood resilience while keeping the existing trail under Austin Avenue for access to the low-water crossing.
  2. South Riverbank Simplifications

    • Elimination of heavy maintenance ramps and a simplified bank terracing approach for easier management.
  3. Native Play Area

    • A resilient play area designed for minimal maintenance that can withstand periodic high water levels.
  4. Drought-Resistant Landscaping

    • Use of native plants requiring minimal watering to enhance sustainability.

Park Entry Improvements

To protect the heritage oak trees, adjustments were made to the park entry off Rock Street:

  • Shallower and wider entry design.
  • A dedicated drop-off zone for visitor convenience.
  • Relocation of restroom facilities for better visibility.
  • Space for a community mural on a potential retaining wall.
  • Increased security with cameras and lighting along main access points.

Community Feedback & Support

City Council members voiced their support for the design, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing green space over concrete developments. Council member Ron Garland highlighted the design’s safety focus, envisioning the park as a community asset.

Future Considerations

Officials discussed potential ordinance updates, including:

  • Banning portable grills and pop-up shade structures near the water.
  • Implementing earlier morning trash removal to curb littering.

Project Timeline

  • Construction documents are expected to be finalized later this year.
  • Regulatory permitting will continue through spring 2027.
  • Construction bidding is set for December 2027, aiming for completion in early 2028.

This design process has seen significant community engagement, with almost 2,000 residents providing feedback over several months, ensuring the updated plan reflects public interests and needs.
