County set to create area for an enlarged Reston Community Center adjacent to Lake Anne.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission is moving forward with plans to relocate a satellite facility of the Reston Community Center (RCC) as part of a redevelopment of the Crescent Apartments near Lake Anne. At a recent meeting on September 9, the commission unanimously recommended a comprehensive plan amendment to increase allowed non-residential space on the 16.5-acre Crescent Apartments site from 2,000 to 30,000 square feet, while keeping the residential units at a maximum of 750.

The existing apartment complex, which has 181 units aimed at households earning 60% or less of the area median income, is set for redevelopment, with the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority partnering with a private developer. The RCC facility currently located on Washington Plaza is said to have outgrown its space and will serve as the new venue on the site.

While some community members expressed concerns about increased traffic and residential density, the discussion at the meeting focused solely on the non-residential aspect of the proposal. The Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on the amendment on September 29 at 4 p.m.
