Study Reveals Strong Connections Between European Markets and UK Automotive Manufacturing

The EU has a significant €24 billion economic interest in the UK automotive sector, as highlighted by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This analysis, conducted by Oxford Economics, emphasizes the deep integration of the EU-UK automotive industries amidst ongoing discussions about the EU’s Industrial Accelerator Act (IAA).

Key insights from the report include:

– The UK is the EU’s largest market for passenger cars and receives more automotive parts from EU manufacturers than any other region, contributing to an annual trade relationship valued at €80 billion.
– The UK’s automotive production supports €24 billion of economic activity across various EU sectors, sustaining 250,000 jobs tied to supply chains and consumer spending.
– Exports from the UK to the EU alone yield €5.6 billion in spending, generating 58,000 jobs and €1.6 billion in tax revenues.
– Proposed ‘Made in Europe’ provisions threaten this relationship by potentially excluding UK-built vehicles from EU incentives, which could disadvantage UK production and reduce EU component sourcing.

The potential ramifications are widespread across major economies in Europe, with significant impacts projected in countries such as Germany, France, Italy, and Spain.

Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the SMMT, stressed that the UK remains crucial to the EU’s automotive ecosystem, advocating for a collaborative approach that recognizes the UK’s role in bolstering competitiveness in the industry.
