NASA’s latest space telescope has officially captured its first images of the universe. The Nancy Grace Roman Telescope, launched on August 30, is currently en route to Lagrange point L2, a position roughly a million miles from Earth where it will start scanning deep space.
Equipped with a 300-megapixel camera, Roman recorded hundreds of stars as green rings of light. The telescope’s Wide Field Instrument is not yet fully focused, which is why the initial test images appear blurry. After calibration over the next few months, the telescope is expected to produce images as clear as those from the Hubble Space Telescope, but covering an area 100 times larger.
Astronomers aim to use these images to tackle some of the universe’s biggest mysteries, such as the origins of dark energy and the search for extraterrestrial life.
