Ohio Proposes U.S. Space Academy for Dayton, Focusing on Wright State and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base

Ohio officials are advocating for the establishment of a U.S. Space Academy in Dayton, linking it to Wright State University and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. This initiative was emphasized during the 2026 Ohio Defense & Aerospace Forum, attended by leaders from various sectors.

Senator Bernie Moreno announced that Ohio plans to respond to a federal request regarding potential academy locations, estimating an investment of around $300 million for facilities. The development would feature new classrooms, facilities, and a roadway connecting Wright State to Wright-Patterson.

The academy aims to accommodate about 5,000 students annually, initially starting with a smaller cohort. Efforts are underway to meet a tight timeline, with hopes that recruits might begin their training next fall. The focus will be on preparing students for future space exploration, including missions to the moon and Mars.

Wright State President Sue Edwards highlighted the university’s existing ties to Wright-Patterson and the U.S. Space Force. Ohio would provide infrastructure, while federal authorization and funding would be essential for the academy’s operation. Moreno noted that Dayton’s rich aviation history and established military infrastructure strengthen its candidacy. The proposal aligns with Ohio’s broader push to support its aerospace industry, leveraging institutions like Wright-Patterson and NASA facilities in the region.
