On September 19, 1996, the space shuttle Atlantis docked with Russia’s Mir space station, marking a significant moment in space exploration. This mission, known as STS-79, involved the exchange of astronauts, with NASA astronaut Shannon Lucid returning home after a record-breaking 188 days aboard Mir. In her place, astronaut John Blaha joined the Mir crew for a four-month stay.
During the mission, Atlantis delivered vital supplies, including food, water, clothing, and scientific experiments to the team aboard Mir, successfully transferring approximately 4,000 pounds of cargo. This mission was notable as it was the first time that a U.S. crew member was exchanged on the Russian space station since its completion.
Additionally, STS-79 used the SPACEHAB module in a “Double Module” configuration for the first time, allowing for more extensive cargo transport. The mission’s success contributed to subsequent collaborative efforts between NASA and Russia, which laid the groundwork for the International Space Station (ISS). The STS-79 mission was the fourth shuttle mission to dock at Mir, with five more missions following, further cementing the partnership in space exploration.
