Toyota’s Gazoo Racing Attributes Dakar Victory to Hydrogen-Powered Hilux

Toyota is making innovative strides in motorsports with the introduction of its DKR GR FC Hilux, a hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) designed for the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia. This project aims to replace the traditional combustion engines with zero-emission hydrogen power, marking a significant shift in extreme off-roading.

Key Features of the DKR GR FC Hilux:

  • Hydrogen Powertrain: It replaces the conventional twin-turbo V6 engine with a hydrogen powertrain, showcasing a commitment to sustainable technology.
  • Collaborative Development: In partnership with entities like Jameel Motorsport, DENSO, and IAV, Toyota has engineered this vehicle for the rugged demands of the Dakar Rally.
  • Advanced Technology: The truck features a “2.5-generation” fuel-cell system, a combination of current and forthcoming technologies, tailored for extreme conditions such as dust and heat.
  • Customized Components: Engineered tanks for hydrogen storage are designed to withstand harsh impacts, while a sophisticated filtration and cooling system protects the fuel cells.

Competition Context:

The DKR GR FC Hilux will participate in the Dakar Future Mission 1000 category, focusing on alternative powertrains over a rigorous 621-mile (1,000 km) stage that mimics challenging rally conditions. The goal isn’t just competition but also data collection to advance hydrogen technology for mainstream markets.

Future Implications:

Toyota aims to leverage insights from the Dakar experience to validate a commercial Hilux Fuel Cell pickup by 2028, positioning itself as a leader in creating robust, zero-emission vehicles suitable for various terrains.

Through this initiative, Toyota not only showcases technological innovation in motorsport but also lays the groundwork for future consumer products that contribute to sustainable transportation.
