Volkswagen has launched the ID.3 GTI, marking its entry into the electric performance car market. Set for a 2027 release, this model claims to be the most powerful GTI in the brand’s history, with 326 horsepower and 402 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds. However, there will be no US availability; American buyers will still rely on the gas-powered Golf GTI.
The ID.3 GTI features a significant drivetrain shift, moving from the traditional front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive, powered by VW’s latest APP550 electric unit. The vehicle is built on an evolved MEB platform with a 79-kWh battery, offering a WLTP range of up to 373 miles. Charging is efficient, allowing for a jump from 10% to 80% in just 29 minutes using a DC fast charger.
Performance-wise, while the ID.3 GTI is powerful, it trails behind competitors like the Tesla Model 3 Performance, which has 510 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 2.9 seconds. The car’s price is expected around €50,000, positioning it in a highly competitive market.
Key features include electronic differential locks, adaptive dampers for improved handling, a central touchscreen displaying various driving modes, and the ability to supply AC power for devices. VW aims to appeal to buyers with a focus on dynamic driving experiences rather than sheer speed.
Overall, the ID.3 GTI represents a blend of EV advancements and classic VW performance, although it remains to be seen how it will compete in a rapidly evolving electric vehicle landscape.
