McLaren Automotive to Inject £500 Million into UK Operations, Unveil Performance SUV, and Shift Engine Manufacturing In-House

McLaren Automotive has announced a significant £500 million investment aimed at expanding its UK manufacturing and engineering capabilities. This initiative, backed by Abu Dhabi’s sovereign investor L’IMAD, is part of a broader strategy to enhance vehicle design, engineering, and production, particularly focused on a new performance SUV.

Key components of the investment include:

  • New Assembly Facility: This will ramp up vehicle production in the UK, ensuring that the forthcoming SUVs are made domestically.
  • In-House Powertrain Development: For the first time, McLaren will design and manufacture its own engines and transmissions to support hybrid models.
  • Expansion of Facilities: The Woking Production Centre and the McLaren Composites Technology Centre in South Yorkshire will see enhancements in carbon-fiber manufacturing.
  • Job Creation: The investment is expected to create at least 1,000 direct and indirect jobs in the UK and potentially support an additional 3,000 jobs through the supply chain.

The company’s focus will include developing a wider range of vehicle types while maintaining strong brand positioning and customer loyalty. McLaren intends to leverage its heritage and engineering prowess to remain competitive in the automotive market, embarking on a new chapter of growth.
