The United States has confirmed it has weapons deployed in space for the first time. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink announced at the Air and Space Cyber Conference that these “on-orbit space control weapons” are designed to defend the Joint Force against threats from hostile adversaries. However, specifics about the types of weapons or their functions were not disclosed.
In 2024, the U.S. government indicated concerns over Russia developing a space-based anti-satellite weapon, although they assessed the threat as not imminent. This reflects ongoing apprehensions about space security, particularly regarding adversarial activities by Russia and China, given the reliance of U.S. infrastructure on satellite communication.
Meink also highlighted a shift towards greater incorporation of autonomous systems in the Air Force, predicting significant changes in capabilities by 2032, such as one-way attack drones potentially replacing traditional artillery.
The establishment of the Space Force in 2019 under former President Trump marked a significant step in addressing these emerging challenges.
