The 6th Family and Friends Gathering of the Hungarian Chan Wu Federation took place on September 13, 2026, on Margaret Island in Budapest. The event featured a vibrant display of traditional Chinese culture, including lion dances, wushu demonstrations, and a tea ceremony, attracting around 100 participants.
Istvan Vargo, president of the federation, highlighted that the federation comprises 300-400 members, with wushu being practiced regularly by about 3,000 people in Hungary. Many attendees described how passers-by often join in on the fun, creating a welcoming atmosphere.
Young performers, like 14-year-old Rusz Levente Andre, shared their passion for lion dance, emphasizing the challenges of teamwork and choreography. Sandor Mikes from the Hungarian Lion Dance Association noted that their team includes members aged 13 to 48 and trains weekly.
The gathering showcased a range of martial arts styles, from the fast-paced Shaolinquan, practiced by 17-year-old Pinter Kuncna Luna, to the slower, more contemplative Taijiquan practiced by 60-year-old Molnar Krisztina. Overall, these traditional sports have integrated into everyday life in Hungary, with the European Wushu Championships set to take place in 2027, signaling growing interest and participation in martial arts.
