Saab Cars in Finland: A Cultural Legacy
Active Use and Enthusiast Culture
In Finland, there are approximately 15,000 Saab cars actively in use despite the brand’s production halting after the Trollhättan plant’s bankruptcy in 2012. Saab enthusiasts are particularly prevalent in Swedish-speaking Ostrobothnia, where the density of these cars is notably high.
Clubs and Collections
Saab Club ry, with 3,500 members, holds various events, including summer and winter gatherings. These events serve as a platform for members to share maintenance tips and spare parts information. The Uusikaupunki Automobile Museum houses the largest Saab collection in Finland, with over one million Saabs assembled in the city. A private collection by Sami Plussaari from Kruunupyy features more than one hundred Saabs.
Tuning Culture and Young Ownership
Tuning enthusiasts like Kristian Salonen from Kurikka have modified their Saabs significantly, indicating the brand’s popularity among this group. Salonen reports that repairs can often be cheaper than for other brands, thanks to the availability of spare parts, some of which are now produced in Sweden. He has also noticed a growing interest in Saab among younger buyers, whom he has sold cars to, sourced from Sweden.
