The University of New Mexico’s Women’s Resource Center (WRC) has officially opened its new space in Mesa Vista Hall, room 1057. This new location, situated in the northwest courtyard across from the fountain, now shares a space with the Asian Pacific Islander Resource Center (AAPIRC), aiming to enhance community support for students.
To celebrate the opening, the WRC hosted a festive cupcake decorating party, allowing attendees to explore the center and meet the staff. Áine McCarthy, the center’s director, expressed enthusiasm about the new location, hoping for increased visibility and foot traffic. The WRC has been serving the students since 1972 and continues to be a critical support resource on campus.
The new configuration encourages collaboration between WRC and AAPIRC, promoting innovative partnerships and student engagement. The WRC will maintain services like free printing, a family-friendly study space, and hygiene products while expanding collaborative efforts.
The center is focused on providing a safe environment for all students, especially during high-risk periods for sexual assault. Their counseling services remain in the previous location to facilitate close collaboration with other support services. McCarthy emphasized the importance of institutionalizing free counseling and raising support standards for the UNM community.
