Salem, Massachusetts, has temporarily halted the implementation of new regulations regarding temporary window art after local businesses raised concerns. Small business owners expressed that the Salem Redevelopment Authority (SRA) had ordered the removal of their colorful window artworks or risk fines, claiming the rules stifle creativity in the town known as “The Witch City.”
Previously, the SRA announced that temporary window art must be changed every three months and should not cover more than 20% of the window or include branding. However, Mayor Dominick Pangallo’s office confirmed that discussions are ongoing to allow for community input on the guidelines. Eric Crescimano, owner of Gulu-Gulu Cafe, mentioned that their artwork featuring their beagles was under threat but expressed optimism about finding a solution that benefits the community and local artists.
