‘Parachute Science’ Is Letting Down the Tropics, Which Hosts Over 80% of Insect Species

Scientists at Monash University have developed a new strategy aimed at addressing a critical flaw in biodiversity conservation efforts: the inadequate attention given to insects, particularly in tropical regions. Led by Dr. Shawan Chowdhury, the research highlights that while insects are vital for ecosystems, agriculture, and food security, conservation initiatives primarily rely on data from temperate areas, which encompass just 20% of global insect diversity.

Social media emerged as a valuable source for biodiversity data, emphasizing the potential of non-traditional resources in driving conservation efforts.

  7. Call for Local Participation: The research advocates for a shift away from “parachute science,” where external researchers exploit local knowledge without collaboration. Instead, it stresses the importance of involving local scientists and communities as equal partners in conservation efforts.
