Pet Pantry and Microchip Station Opens in Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Two local animal organizations have launched a pet pantry and microchip station at Trellis Brewing in the Smoketown neighborhood. This initiative aims to assist pet owners in accessing essential supplies and reuniting lost pets with their families, circumventing the need for shelters.
The blue box, developed by Pawsitively Proactive in partnership with Pets4Life, operates similarly to a “little free library.” Community members can donate or pick up pet supplies for both cats and dogs.
In addition to the pantry, the site features a microchip scanning station. The Louisville & Southern Indiana Microchip Scanner Network reports that there are 28 scanning stations around the city. Instructions for using the scanner and finding pet owners through microchip numbers are provided in the pantry.
Traci Hall, owner of Pawsitively Proactive and a board member for Pets4Life, emphasized the importance of helping lost pets return home without overwhelming shelters.
“People don’t know where to go,” Hall said. “So, they can come here 24/7, 365 days a year, scan a dog, grab a beer, wait for the family, and reunite without going to the shelter.”
The pet pantry aims to provide owners with essential items like kitty litter, dog food, and leashes when they need support. Hall remarked, “People love their pets and just need help getting by. If we can provide those items, it helps the animal stay healthy and in their home, avoiding the shelter—it’s a win-win.”
While there are many microchip scanning stations in the area, Hall believes this is the first pet pantry in the city. Trellis Brewing was chosen as a location due to its dog-friendly environment.
“It’s a perfect fit for our dog-centered community,” said Jessica Gehefer, a bartender at Trellis Brewing.
Looking ahead, Hall hopes to establish more pet pantries in walkable areas of the city. She noted that eight ZIP codes in Louisville lack veterinary services, and both Pawsitively Proactive and Pets4Life are committed to addressing this gap.
