Explanation of XZ Andromedae

Is XZ Andromedae winking at us? The main object in today’s animation is not just one but two stars. XZ Andromedae, highlighted by the bold lines, is an Algol-type eclipsing binary with a nearly edge-on orbit from Earth’s viewpoint.

Light Curve Analysis

The bottom light curve illustrates the system’s light fluctuations as the cooler star eclipses its hotter companion. Investigations of multiple XZ Andromedae light curves suggest the presence of two additional stars in orbit around the main system.

This specific light curve was generated using Citizen Astronomy, an open-source software dedicated to differential photometry. This approach captures the brightness difference between a target star and a comparison star, monitoring changes over time. It effectively minimizes disruptions caused by instruments and Earth’s atmosphere.

Applications

Beyond eclipsing binaries, this analytical method aids in the study of:

  • Transiting exoplanets
  • Accreting black holes
  • Supernovae
  • And other time-varying astronomical phenomena
