On June 6, 2026, over 1,000 visitors engaged with NASA’s sea level science during World Ocean Day at the University of Georgia Aquarium. Organized by NASA’s SEAL (Sea Level Education, Awareness, and Literacy) project, the event focused on connecting NASA’s sea level rise data with educators and coastal communities, particularly those impacted by climate change.
The SEAL initiative, in collaboration with NOAA Sea Grant programs, aims to enhance understanding of sea level rise through interactive lessons and community engagement. Attendees participated in activities such as the “Tumbling Tower” game, illustrating the impacts of rising seas, and creating “sea level friendship bracelets” symbolizing local sea level rise.
A highlight of the event was the introduction of an augmented reality sandbox, allowing participants to shape sand into landscapes while visualizing NASA-informed sea level projections. This hands-on experience demonstrated potential resilience strategies to prepare communities for climate change.
