Mexico’s automotive industry showed mixed performance in August. While light-vehicle production fell by 1.4% to 344,940 units compared to the previous year, exports increased by 1.3% to 300,475 vehicles. For the year-to-date, exports are nearly flat, totaling 2.25 million, a slight decrease of 0.06% from 2025.
The U.S. remains the dominant market, receiving 76.3% of Mexico’s vehicle exports. General Motors led production with a significant 18.1% rise to 79,230 vehicles, while Nissan’s output fell by 26%. Other manufacturers like Stellantis and Volkswagen showed minor declines or increases.
Overall, the production trend for 2026 has been stagnant, with a 0.7% decrease for the year so far. Light trucks dominate production, constituting 79.3% of total output. The automotive sector’s close ties to the U.S. market underscore its vulnerability to policy changes affecting trade.
