The Fort Collins Science Center has introduced KWICer, an open-source software designed to assist public land managers in creating annotated bibliographies more efficiently. KWIC, which stands for Keyword in Context, facilitates a streamlined analysis of scientific texts by extracting relevant context around specific keywords, making it easier to derive actionable insights from complex literature.
Developed by Lydia Bailey, a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), KWICer aims to meet the urgent demands of land managers who must navigate vital legislation like the Endangered Species Act and the Clean Air Act. With a focus on how scientifically backed decisions are critical yet time-sensitive, Bailey and her team have tailored this tool to support effective management tasks, particularly in the western U.S., where public land management is a significant issue.
Since its release, KWICer has been showcased in conferences and has garnered interest from various stakeholders including NGOs and academic institutions. Bailey is committed to enhancing the software’s usability while maintaining its core functionality, encouraging user feedback as the project evolves. The software’s public availability underscores the USGS’s dedication to transparency in decision-making related to public land management in Colorado and beyond.
