Race Weekend Ignites Economic Surge in Darlington

Darlington County, S.C. — Race weekend is peak season for local businesses and vendors as thousands of NASCAR fans flock to the area. Many stopped by shops along Harry Byrd Highway en route to the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

Tammy Howle, owner of Raceway Grill, reported record crowds this year, noting her restaurant served over 300 customers daily since Wednesday, far more than typical. With the influx of visitors, her team adjusted operations by simplifying the menu, extending hours, and adding staff.

Outdoor vendors, like David Howard, face different challenges, particularly the weather. Howard has sold NASCAR memorabilia for nearly 20 years and noted that high heat can deter fans from shopping.

The Cook Out Southern 500 took place on Sunday, September 6th, starting at 5 p.m. Local businesses hope to reap the rewards of this bustling event.
