The 44th annual Okinawan Festival recently concluded at the Hawaii Convention Center, celebrating the cultural connection between Okinawa and Hawaii. The weekend event featured live music, traditional performances, and local craft vendors, marking the 75th anniversary of the Hawaii United Okinawa Association (HUOA).
HUOA President Frances Kuba emphasized the role of community leaders in maintaining the organization’s legacy. The festival, organized entirely by volunteers, exemplified the Okinawan philosophy of “yui maru,” or working together. Past HUOA President David Arakawa described this spirit as akin to the Hawaiian idea of ohana, or family.
Governor Josh Green, who recently visited Okinawa, highlighted the importance of this relationship, noting its significance amid recent challenges, including weather disturbances. The festival drew crowds eager for traditional Okinawan cuisine, with highlights including soba and andagi. A new culinary collaboration introduced Okinawan-inspired dishes through a pop-up by Prince Waikiki.
