Civilization 7 Expands into the Atomic Age with Major Update and Expansion
Firaxis Games has announced that Civilization 7 will soon venture into the Atomic Age, a new era that will be introduced through the free ‘Arc of Tomorrow’ update in 2027. This update marks the game’s first foray into historical content beyond the Modern Age. Alongside this update, a paid expansion titled ‘Earthrise’ has also been unveiled.
On September 6, Firaxis shared the development roadmap for Civilization 7, revealing that both the free update and the ‘Earthrise’ expansion will be released in 2027. However, a significant patch (1.5.0) with sought-after quality-of-life improvements is set to launch later this month.
The Atomic Age will be explored through the ‘Arc of Tomorrow’ update, which promises to be a substantial free content addition similar to the previous ‘Test of Time’ update. This era will add around 100 years to the gameplay timeline, moving from the 1950s to the 2050s. Players can expect new civilizations, leaders, units, buildings, and gameplay mechanics reflecting the complexities of nuclear warfare and the Cold War, alongside achievements in space exploration. The return of Mahatma Gandhi, who has a contentious association with nuclear armament in the franchise, has also been confirmed.

In addition to the update, the ‘Earthrise’ expansion will revolve around the Cold War space race and missions across our solar system, promising a richer experience in space exploration while also emphasizing environmental protection for Earth.
Later this year, Patch 1.5.0 will introduce the much-anticipated ‘True Start Location: Earth’ map, allowing civilizations to begin near their actual geographic locations, enhancing realism in gameplay.
Firaxis intends to disclose more exciting details in the future, with plans to recruit playtest participants for ‘Arc of Tomorrow’ by the end of this year. Creative Director Ed Beach remarked on the excitement of the announcement, emphasizing the community’s enduring love for the franchise spanning over 35 years.
